Grand Junction, Colorado is a city in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. Grand Junction was founded on July 24, 1867 by Austin N. Parker and James W. White as the junction of the two main trails running through San Miguel County: the Santa Fe Trail and the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad's Union Pacific Railway Line. The first post office in Grand Junction was established in 1868 by George Laddington. It opened on July 24th and served as the village's primary link with other settlements in San Miguel County. In 1870, Grosvenor Place between Main Street and First Street became known as "the Parade Ground" because it hosted weekly parades from different neighborhoods around town until 1909 when they were moved to nearby Longmont for security reasons after skirmishes between rival gangs there began to escalate into open warfare. In 1875, a group of businessmen platted what would become downtown Grand Junction on land that now includes most of present-day University Avenue between Main and Second Streets (later renamed Park Boulevard). The original courthouse was built here in 1893; it burned down in 1902 but was replaced with a more modern structure that still stands today. The area now occupied by University Avenue also served as Grand Junction's first commercial district during its early years - local merchants pooled their resources to purchase goods such as flour, cows, hay, lumber, etc., from across Denver and sold them directly to residents or shipped items directly into Denver via railroad cars hauled by mules or wagons drawn by horses. Downtown Grand Junction experienced rapid growth following World War II when many veterans returned home from overseas and took up residence within the city limits - many businesses closed due to wartime competition but reopened once hostilities ended several months later. Downtown Grand Junction experienced major redevelopment beginning in earnest after Interstate 25 bypassed town altogether southbound starting near Intersection of Welton Road & I-25 Exit 122 (now Anschutz Drive) back in 1978 – resulting in an influx of high-end retail stores (including Sears), office buildings (most notably One Park Plaza), restaurants including several international chains as well as numerous small businesses completed along I-25 corridor all without having ever been developmentally obligated or approved by then City Manager Donny Wexler despite his objections – setting an example which has been followed ever since for various other areas experiencing rapid redevelopment not subject to approval pursuant to Town Planning regulations such as those surrounding Boulder & Golden Counties where various large new developments have continuously arisen notwithstanding ongoing community opposition notwithstanding efforts made annually by various organizations representing resident interests even if typically poorly funded compared To ensure continued compliance with Town Planning Regulations regardless thereof)
