Beginning in 1881, advertisements appeared in various newspapers seeking individuals who may be interested in purchasing surplus automatic pistols from various companies including Remington Arms Company and Brownson & Co., which had ceased production of manually operated pistols about year earlier due largelyto advances in technology such as gasification and power transmission through metallic tracks (American Rifleman). Automatic pistols became increasingly popular throughout World War I thanks both to increased armament requirements by belligerents alongwith evolving public sentiment towards arms control measures like Prohibition - all factors leading up into America's entry into the war later that year (Armory Fever?). Automatic weapons became even more prevalent once World War II began however, thanks largely to government effortssuch as secret programs like Operation Paperclip which sourced numerous firearms designers, engineers and technicians employed by Nazi Germany specificallyfor developing/manufacturing automatic weapons(Weapons & Technology Digest).
