The first Europeans in what would become Colorado were Spanish travelers who traveled upriver from Mexico in 1670-1672. In 1806 United States surveyor James Ewing headed an exploration of this area which found a pass for wagon trains across Pikes Peak that led down into Missouri Valley. This early discovery spurred continued development along this route as farmers sought transportation links with what they saw as new markets and Landsat data from NASA showed that these areas had potential for irrigation agriculture which helped spur further development within 10 years. By 1827 there were over 100 people living in Grand Junction when gold was discovered at Old Fort Washita on Gunnison Creek near present day Monument Valley

In 1907, Grand Junction became an incorporated town with a population of 5,000. The town experienced rapid growth in the 1960s and 1970s as it became the location for numerous high-technology industries such as Emerson Electric and Hewlett-Packard. However, in the 1990s Grand Junction began to experience declining popularity due to economic decline and competition from other nearby communities. Today, Grand Junction is home to a few thousand residents and is primarily known for its natural resources, including coal mining and oil production.
