In the early 1800s, Grand Junction was a small mining town in southeastern Colorado. The area that is now Grand Junction was first occupied by the Ute people, who lived in what is now southern Utah. The Ute were a Native American tribe that had their own language and culture. They also hunted and gathered wild plants and animals. In 1869, President Ulysses S. Grant issued an Executive Order creating the United States Cavalry Regiment. This order allowed for Native Americans to serve in the military if they were able to take an oath of allegiance to the United States. In 1870, General John Custer led his cavalry regiment into battle against 500 Sioux Indians at Little Bighorn River Battlefield near present-day Denver. Custer’s troops were victorious, but he was killed in action later that year. This event helped lead to increased patriotism among America’s Indian population and made Grand Junction a hot spot for Cavalry recruitment efforts throughout the years. By 1876, there were over 1,500 Cavalry troopers stationed in Grand Junction alone! During World War I, many of these same troopers served with distinction on various battlefields across Europe including Ypres ( Belgium), Somme ( France), Aisne ( France), Arras ( Belgium), Vimy Ridge ( France) and Passchendaele ( Belgium). After World War I ended, many of these veterans returned home to help rebuild postwar America andGrand Junction became one of its most important industrial centers during this time period.
