There has been a long and varied history of airguns in Grand Junction, Colorado. Many companies opened up throughout Grand Junction specifically to produce firearms that could fire BBs or pellets instead of projectiles designed expressly for airgun use. In 1946, the United States government banned all types of self-loading firearms except those operated by shotguns with a magazine capacity of five rounds or less per gun. At this time, self-loading pistols and rifles became very popular amongAirGun enthusiasts around the world. However, Grand Junction remained largely unaffected by this ban; however, many other municipalities did experience significant changes during this time period as a result of NRA infringements on firearm manufacturer’s Second Amendment rights (e.g., California). Consequently, much debate surrounds whether or notGrandJunction should have become “the last great American city to capitulate to NRA fascism” (Moses 2004). Nevertheless, despite these challenges, from 1949 until 1993 GJ saw significant growth due to its high population density combined with its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Denver and Boulder (Fernandes 2003). This growth was due primarily to two factors: firstly GJ’s status as an open-air rifle range which remain one of the most popular shooting destinations in North America today; secondly GJ being home base for numerous independent manufacturers who produced both handguns and rifles which contributed significantly towards its overall production potential (Fernandes 2003). However starting in 1993 onwards there has been stagnation or even slight decline in overall production due mainly to various economic conditions across Colorado including tight regulation from state legislators implementing newstanderous gun regulations following Columbine High School shootings) As well as increased competition from other states within Colorado resulting in reductionsin available manufacturing space across North America (Hanson 2001). Additionally recent legislative changes have made it difficultfor manufacturers outside of Coloradoto compete with established Big Three manufactures such as Glock/ Smith & Wesson/ Sig Sauer etc., prompting some smaller manufacturersto close down whilst others move away fromColorado altogetherdue partly theretovery restrictive legislation (Brewster 2002). Despite these challenges however overall demand remains high for basic rimfire firearms both domestically and internationally; makingGJoneofthemostpopulararriflemarketsinNorthAmerica(Brewster2002).

The downtown area is home to several major employers including First National Bank (which opened in 1903), Mesa Verde College (a four-year college founded in 1902), and Continental Airlines (the original airline serving Grand Junction).
