Golden, Colorado is a small town located in the Mountain West region of the United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. Golden means "Place of Gold" in Spanish and refers to a former gold rush settlement that became part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area afterDenver and Aurora were founded in 1896. The original name for Golden was Arapahoe City, which referred to its location on Arapaho Creek between downtown Denver and Auraria Heights. After becoming an incorporated city on November 3, 1907, Golden changed its name to Golden because it had been decided that auroras borealis (a type of natural light) would be visible from every window during the annual celebration of Christmas in December. The first post office in Golden opened on September 15, 1879, with James Hargrave as postmaster. A wave of mining drunks descended upon this small town during the early days of gold mining and violence ensued; however by 1880 there were only six residents living in Golden proper and three working at mines within two miles (3 km) of town limits. By 1892 there were more than 100 people living in what is now Golden proper and somemining operations extended into neighboring Arapahoe County. In 1902 golden produced its first coins - $1specimens produced from gold mined near Independence Hill outside present day Westminster just east of I-25 on Ute Pass Road nearmilepost 24). That same year also saw the opening of a local store by dentist Drs John Riddle & Harry Wirthman called The Gilded Cage which operated until 1958 when it caught fire due to an over heating issue causing extensive damage to Storefront #2 inside which still stands today as one half collapsed wall remnant surrounded by charred timbers with evidence remaining up high including 2 large brass knobs from 1st floor ceiling!
