Golden is part of the Park County seat and is home to Westminster Abbey and Holy Cross Catholic Church. In addition to its churches and other religious institutions, Golden also features a number of historical landmarks, including the old Golden Western Hotel and the golden mile marker. The earliest evidence for human habitation in what is now Golden dates back to about 12,000 BC when Paleo-Indians used this area as an important hunting ground. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders who traveled through Park County in 1765. In 1806, Gold expedition members James Halliday and Edward Fenton discovered gold near present-day Golden after exploring what are now Lost Creek Canyon and Garden Creek Gorge on their way from California. This discovery led to increased exploration activity in this region by both Americans and Mexicans alike, which resulted in multiple discoveries of gold over time. Gold fever hit southwestern Colorado during the late 1800s due to reports thatuggets could be found as high as $30 per ounce! The influx of miners into this region caused many towns to fall into bankruptcy or go out of business because there was no market for their products. By 1905, however, mining had stopped completely in favor of other forms of economic development such as agriculture and manufacturing. The townsite was enlarged several times until it became what is now known as Golden. In 1931, Golden was renamed for President Franklin D. Roosevelt to reflect his support for the town during its earliest years. The town has since made a significant contribution to American history, culture, and economy. In recent decades, Golden has undergone a cultural change that has seen it become more diverse and welcoming to residents from all over the United States and around the world. The history of Golden begins with its founding as a small settlement on Indian Creek about 12 miles east of present-day Denver. For many years, this location served as an isolated outpost for pioneer families who prospected for gold near Denver’s central business district. In 1876, however, settlers began moving into this area and soon enough there were several hundred people living hereabouts – including many from eastern Colorado Springs (now part ofColorado Springs). The first white people to live in Golden were the Carruths, who arrived in 1868. The first store opened in 1870. The town was named for William T. Golden, a wealthy man who donated land for the town. Golden grew rapidly and by 1892 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, the city built its first hospital and by 1912 it had a school and hospital annex. In 1916, Golden became an incorporated city with a population of over 10,000 people. It was the fastest growing city in Colorado during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, the city made significant contributions to the war effort by creating jobs throughout its economy. After the war ended, however, Golden began to decline as many residents left for other townships or counties within Colorado Springs County. By 1970,Golden had only around 50 residents remaining and it officially ceased to exist that year when it lost its charter as an incorporated municipality
