Golden, Colorado is a small town in Jackson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. The first people to live in Golden were the anyways who settled on the east side of the Animas River in what is now Pershing County in 1868. They traded with Native Americans and grew corn, wheat, and other crops. In 1909, gold was found near Golden and rapid development ensued as prospectors started coming to find nuggets and ore from nearby mountains. By 1920, over 1 million people had moved into Golden from all over Colorado. In 1924, Golden became an incorporated city and began to grow rapidly as a commercial center for mining and farming around it. The Ames Hotel was built in 1925 as one of the first large buildings in Grand Junction. Around this time also came new transportation methods such as buses that transported miners and their families between mines and farms outside of town limits. By 1940, Golden had become one of the most important cities in western Colorado due to its heavy industry including engineering firms such as Siemens AG (later Intel) and AECOM; trucking services hub Mesa Loma; groceries stores like Safeway; movie theaters like Regal Cinemas; hospitals including Denver General Hospital (now known as Children's Healthcare Colorado); schools like Roosevelt High School; a post office called Post #2 which opened on November 14th 1912;and many more businesses that made up its early years such as American Glass Company (renamed Alcoa). During World War II, industrial production increased significantly due to wartime demand for aluminum products from aircraft manufacturers across America. Golden was founded in 1876 by Mormon pioneers. The town was named for the golden sunburst that can be seen from the top of Mount San Miguel. The first post office was built in 1877 and the first store opened in 1880. Golden experienced its heyday during World War I when it had a population of over 20,000 people. However, during the 1920s and 1930s, Golden lost its status as a major center of commerce to nearby Denver. In the 1940s and 1950s, Golden underwent a series of physical changes thanks to new transportation infrastructure developed in Colorado Springs and Aurora. Nowadays, Golden is a small mining town with limited economic significance but is home to several popular restaurants and bars.
