Golden, Colorado is a town in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,013 at the 2010 census. Golden is the local government's primary economic and social center. It is part of the Rocky Mountains region. The first Europeans to visit Golden were French fur trappers in 1804-5. In 1859, gold was discovered on the San Miguel River near present-day Golden; this led to rapid growth of the town as people began prospecting for gold and silver. The discovery of oil in Parker County in 1901 made Golden an early oil producer, but production stopped after World War I due to lack of available land and competition from other oil producers. Golden has been a residential community since its incorporation as a municipality in 1907; it became an industrial center with heavy manufacturing during World War II until that industry peaked in the 1940s and 1950s. Since then, there has been much redevelopment into light commercial and office space along with new housing developments around downtown; some old mill buildings have been preserved as museum exhibits or used for apartment development. The current mayor is DeeDee Haynie (D), who was elected on November 3rd, 2018 by residents over her predecessor Dan Feuerstein (R). Haynie takes office on January 1st 2019

Golden, Colorado was founded in 1859 by George C. Smith and James W. Golden. The town was named for George C. Smith's discovery of gold near the current location of Telluride, Colorado. The mining industry in Golden rapidly grew after the discovery of gold, and the town became a major center for the mining industry. The townsite that now includes Golden was laid out on a square mile (1 km2) area which had been surveyed by Captain John Hutton in 1848. The name "Golden" was chosen because it sounded like good ore would be found there. The first post office in Golden opened in 1861, and until 1907 it served as the only post office in what is now Golden County. In 1907, Golden incorporated as a city separate from its adjacent rural county seat of Telluride. Today, Golden is one of the most populous cities in Colorado with over 100,000 residents and is home to many high-tech companies such as Intel and Googleplex
