Golden is an incorporated city in western Colorado, United States. It was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1859. The population was 7,915 at the 2010 census. Golden is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Colorado gold rush period (1859 to 1867) Mormon pioneers travelling eastward during the early years of the Colorado Gold Rush discovered rich gold and silver mines in what is now Golden County, Colorado. In December 1859 a small group of Mormons under the leadership of Brigham Young set out from Salt Lake City on horseback for Golden County in search of new land to settle and build their own Zion Chapel colony on. The first post office at Golden was established on February 12, 1860; it served as the interim county seat until November 1861 when Centerville became operational. The first mayor and council were appointed by Brigham Young himself with instructions to manage "the town as best they could." After about a year of fruitless exploration, some prospectors decided to strike it rich beyond Cache Valley and struck water near present-day Westminster while traveling down Foothills Creek Road today known as Parker Road on July 2, 1860. This initial discovery led quickly to more strikes including one over 500 feet deep just south of town limits which yielded $2,000 worth of gold Nuggets! These were later named after local leaders such as George Atherton and Orson Hyde who had put up with hard work helping lead these discoveries: David Hockaday (1860 – 1865), John Darnall (1862 – 1865), Lorenzo Snow (1863 – 1865), Wm Hite (1868 – 1870). With so much good ground being discovered rapidly there was also a great deal rivalry among miners over who would get credit for any finds made while others simply went along with whatever anyone said because they thought it would be easy money! Nevertheless within two years all but two members of Brigham Young’s original Council had either died or been forced into retirement following hostilities between Utah militia forces loyal to President James Kansa against Ulysses S Grant’s military occupation during the Civil War; these men included David Hockaday and Lorenzo Snow although Orson Hyde still remained active in mining operations until his death in 1886. By 1862 several farms had been organized around Sweetwater River northeast of town with most residents coming from Independence or Logan Counties back East including many farmers/gold miners themselves! The community quickly grew enough that a train stop called “Golden Station” replaced Sweetwater Ferry Landing where passengers could disembark for supplies or travel onward into Douglas County another 5 miles downstream! By 1863 residences numbered 116 with businesses consisting mostly storekeepers composing early commerce district plus several blacksmith shops and 3 sawmills supplying goods needed by settlers throughout Douglas County not just Golden but also Durango Springs basin! By 1865 there were more than 400 residents living within 1 mile radius surrounding what is now downtown Golden only adding 100 more through annexation by other towns during that decade becoming one continuous urban area reaching its current size today thanks largely to oil fracking which has dramatically increased production rates across this region creating jobs both directly and indirectly!!
Golden, Colorado was founded in 1859 by James W. Hailey and others with the goal of creating a new town on the northern edge of the Larimer Valley. The area that would become Golden had been part of what is now Colorado since the late 1800s, when Denver and other valley towns were growing up around Fort Collins and Pueblo. In 1859, Haileyand his partners purchased 640 acres in what is now Golden from David Williamson for $1 million. The land was mostly rural but it did have some scattered buildings and a few miles of railroad track. So early on in Golden's history, there were many challenges to getting started as a town: There wasn't much good land out there, most people thought it was too far away from anything else, and prevailing attitudes at the time said that towns should only be built where there was potential for growth. But over time things changed; people started thinking about how they could make their community better so it could attract more residents and businesses. And so Golden became one of those thriving communities that has thrived ever since... even if its boundaries have sometimes shifted
