At this time, these devices also had strobe modes which made them more visible in low light conditions. It is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and it is bordered by Fort Collins to its south and east, Durango to its north and west, Silverton to its northwest, and Pueblo to its northeast. The first Europeans to visit what is now Golden were led by Captain James Clark in 1814 as part of his exploration of what became Mexico. He named the area "New Spain" after his discoveries there. In 1828, George Gunnison founded Denver City on land he had purchased from Manuel Armijo y Costilla near where Golden now stands. Gunnison named his new city for General John Custer who had been killed during an Indian battle two years earlier nearpresent-day Greeley. AfterDenver City was destroyed by fire in 1872, Gold Rush settlers began moving into what is now Golden from nearby towns such as Arapahoe, Broomfield, Ft. Collins and Trinidad Basin areas which had all been ravaged by gold Fever during that time period including some estimates that up to 50% of those living within 10 miles (16 km) of Denver died from fever during that period; some sources say as much as 90%! In 1876 Philander Gates opened a grocery store called The Gilded Cage which became one of the most successful businesses in town at that time providing food for miners who traveled downriver on canoes or rafts carrying goods upriver towards Gold Hill where they would then sell their product back down at low prices to local farmers before continuing their journey further upriver or downstream along Eventually these travelers would reach Denver where they would trade their products with local merchants until finally reaching Independence Hall in downtown Denver where they could exchange their products for gold bullion coins known today as American Eagle Nickels & Dimes
