Golden is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Golden was founded in 1881 by Mormon pioneers as a fur-trading and farming community on the east bank of the Animas River. In 1924, it became an incorporated village with a charter from the Colorado General Assembly. The first post office in Golden opened in 1881, and remained open until 1907. The first store was built on Main Street in 1890. The town name came about because of its location on the eastern bank of the Animas River near what is now known as Gold's Mill Dam (an Iron Range National Monument). At that time, gold was being found all over western Colorado; but most of it was located south of Fort Collins and west of Aurora. To ensure timely delivery to miners working in those areas, wagon trains brought ore downriver each day to be processed into coins or jewelry at Gold's Mill before they were taken back upriver to Fort Collins for shipment back home. Gold's mill closed around 1920 due to low gold prices and economic depression; however, it reopened briefly for storage during World War II before shutting down again for good that year. Afterward, Golden experienced steady growth as new businesses moved into town: a grocery store (1927), pet store (1928), library (1929), banks (1937), post office (1945), doctor's office (1968), and now several restaurants and shops including one called "Moses" named after early settler Moses Gunnarson who ranched there from 1896 until his death in 1927. In 1954 Mayor Fenton Curry established Golden Heritage Museum which contains artifacts associated with local history including early settlers' homes and furnishings from various periods throughout Golden’s history; pioneer exhibits featuring Indian artifacts from nearby Ft Collins ; American Indian art galleries showcasing Plains Chief costumes & paintings dating back to 1800 BC ; automobiles dating back to 1923 housed within restored garage remnants still extant today inside museum walls.; original golden courthouse building completed circa 1899 remains standing next door also preserved today; two dams completed along riverbank - Gold's Mill Dam(1891) & Gold Bridge Dam(1924) - providing power for mills run by Denver City Utilities ever since.; numerous other historic buildings have been destroyed or altered over time making it difficult Reconstruction efforts have included attempts at relocating many pieces outlying homes onto city streets fronting on parkland adjoins residential neighborhoods etc.–resulting almost complete demolition/occupancyof entire downtown core since 2007
