When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Golden, Colorado, there was little evidence of human settlement. The area that is now Golden had been inhabited by the Arapaho and Cheyenne for centuries before the arrival of European explorers in the late 1800s. In 1859, American settlers Captain George Armstrong Custer and his company were killed during an Indian attack on a wagon train near present-day San Miguel County. This event helped start a conflict between the US government and Native Americans that would last for decades. On July 27, 1861, US President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9981 which authorized Gold Rush miners to begin working in California without surrendering their gold bullion or other property. In response to this order, thousands of prospectors descended on what is now Golden from all over America. Many of these men lost everything they had brought with them - including their families - as they rushed into what was then a largely unregulated mining region. The population of Golden quickly grew as people worked in both local and imported mines. By 1865, there were more than 2,000 residents living in what is today Golden County. The boom years of the Gold Rush were short-lived; within five years most of the gold had been mined out and new discoveries began to be made elsewhere in Nevada and California.
