Golden, Colorado is a small town located in the eastern corner of Colorado. The original inhabitants of Golden were the Utes and they soon began to settle here. In 1876, the first state rifle championship was held at Golden, and it was won by George Armstrong Custer. As Golden continued to grow, so did its ammo industry. By 1907, there were three companies manufacturing ammunition in Golden: Winchester Ammunition Company (later renamed Winchester Repeating Arms), Howell Ammo Company (now known as Remington Arms), and Adolphus Greeley Ammunition Company (now known as Black Hills Ammunition). In 1954, White Sands Arsenal opened up in nearby Monument County and quickly became one of the leading producers of ammunition for both military and sporting use. Shortly thereafter, other munitions manufacturers followed suit including Goldwater Arsenal in 1964 and Browning Automatic Weapons Manufacturing Corporation in 1978.
