The history of scopes in Fruita, Colorado goes back to at least 1901. That year, a group of men from the town decided to buy a new telescope for use in their local parish. The men named their new telescope the "Fruita Telescope." This telescope was used by the church and other local organizations until it was sold in 1925 to James E. Slade, who operated it until 1951. From 1951-1957, the Fruita Telescope Association (FTAA) operated it as a museum. In 1957, the FTAA donated it to the University of Colorado at Boulder which operates it today as one of its four research telescopes. In 1969, CU Boulder renamed the telescope "James E. Slade Observatory." During its time at CU Boulder, the James E. Slade Observatory has been responsible for making many important discoveries about stars and galaxies. One such discovery was made in 1978 when scientists were using the observatory to study binary star systems—two stars that are very close together but have different physical properties). Using equipment on-site and data collected from space missions such as Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope, they were able to determine that these two stars are actually two separate galaxies! Fruita is a small town in Gunnison County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Fruita is considered to be part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood micropolitan area. It is located on the southern edge of the San Juan Mountains and has a long history as a farming community. The first Europeans to visit Fruita were Spanish traders in 1539, who named it Paso de la Plata after their trading post in that region. In 1887, Fruita became an incorporated village when several nearby towns merged to form Gunnison County. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson visited Fruita and declared it "the most beautiful place I have ever seen". He noted that its surroundings were "rugged and unspoiled", adding that he would not mind living there if he could find enough fruit trees for his breakfast cereal. The following year, Congress passed the Federal Trade Commission's Act of 1916 which required all businesses with more than $5,000 in sales per year to file state business directories. In 1935, during World War II, fruit growers from across the Rocky Mountains contributed more than $1 million towards production assistance for US military forces fighting in Europe. That same year also saw the opening of Canute's Mines (later known as Fruita) by The Canute Company Limited under contract from defense contractor Rheinmetall Corporation. That company played an important role in early pioneer agriculture hereabouts; among others they built storage depots and raised crops such as wheat and cotton while also manufacturing munitions used by both Allied and Axis forces throughout WWII. By 1949 nearly all production had shifted to overseas markets due to increased postwar competition along with dramatic increases in commodity prices - leading many family farmers into retirement or out of business entirely within only a few decades! Today much of what made this community so special has been lost or melted away as result of successive economic cycles: however some key aspects remain such as roadside restaurants serving Americanized Chinese cuisine (known locally simply as 'the China Inn'); downtown filled with colorful houses dating back to before World War II; Route 66 running through town center; apple orchards still standing; local radio stations playing classical music day/night 365 days a year...fruit growing continues today despite recent struggles... Fruita, Colorado was founded on July 1, 1876 by John C. Fremont and named for the fruit trees that grew there. Fruita became a community after residents donated land to the town. The first post office was established in Fruita on October 3, 1876. The first store in Fruita opened its doors on December 6, 1879. The community had a population of 10 people when it incorporated as a village on February 9, 1880. The first mayor of Fruita was George Wirths.
