In 1912, Fruita became the first town in Colorado to allow handguns. The town's founder, John Haggerty, believed that a gun was the best way to protect himself and his family from bandits and other criminals. In order for residents of Fruita to legally possess handguns, they had to pass a training course and get a license from the county sheriff. Gun owner education programs were also started in Albuquerque and Durango in 1916. These programs helped new gun owners learn how to safely use their firearms and protect themselves from crime. In 1949, the Colorado legislature passed Amendment 64 which allowed citizens of Colorado over the age of 18 years old to purchase firearms without having previously passed a background check. This amendment also made it illegal for municipalities or counties to ban handgun ownership or sales. The following year, in 1950, Fruita City Council adopted Resolution 7-2 decriminalizing marijuana possession as long as it was done privately between friends or family members within 3 days of each other. At this time, marijuana possession was still considered an infraction punishable by up to 6 months imprisonment and/or a $100 fine.

Fruita has been settled since 1872 when John Waddell and his party of Mormons came through the area on their way to Utah. In 1912, Fruita's first post office opened and served until it closed in 1959. The settlement grew around the fruit industry which started by settlers picking fruit offthe ground with their hands. By 1907 there were five or six businesses in Fruita and citrus production became an important part of the economy after several farmers bought land to grow oranges and grapefruit. The arrival of Interstate 25 made farming difficult so many families left Fruita for other parts of Colorado before it truly developed as a town. In 1970s construction began on what would become Fruita Municipal Airport which helped spur growth in the community during its early years while also creating jobs for local residents. Currently home to two small airports winging out from downtown Denver - one called Aurora Regional Airport and another called Centennial Airport - both airports have contributed to economic development within the town limits over time. Today, fruit growers continue to play an important role in Fruita's economy as well as ranchers who provide support for livestock operations within the communty boundaries
Fruita was founded in 1885 by J.C. Foss and his brother-in-law, A.M. Bechtel. The first post office was established in Fruita on December 2, 1885. The town grew quickly due to the rise of the railroad and Landsberg Copper Mining Company, which established a mineshaft within the town limits in 1895. The original fruit trees were brought over from California and planted in 1912 by Gertrude Kirchhoffermeyer on her property south of the town center. In 1916, Mrs. Kirchhoffermeyer donated 5 acres (2 hectares) of land near her home to the Fruita School District for use as a school playground and commons area
