Fruita, Colorado is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,353 at the 2010 census. Fruita was founded in 1867 by Mormon settlers. It was named after Brigham Young's fruit farm near Salt Lake City. Fruita is located in the eastern Rocky Mountains and has an elevation of 4,643 feet (1,471 m). The town is bordered to the north by Pueblo and to the east by Aspen. The first post office in Fruita opened on November 15, 1867. The name of the town was changed from "Fruita" to "Fruita Springs" on February 14, 1888 after it became part of Douglas County. In 1950, Fruita became home to what is now known as Cherry Creek Elementary School which served students from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade until it closed in January 2001 due to budget cuts. In its place began Cherry Creek Middle School which serves ninth through twelfth grades until it closed in September 2016 due to budget cuts again. The original Mormon settlers who arrived at Fruita were handcart riders who made their way overland from Utah during the winter of 1865-1866. They were greeted by snowdrifts so high that they couldn't continue their journey and had to turn around and return home; this event would become known as "the Great Snow Storm". Upon arriving back home they unloaded their crates of food and supplies at a nearby ranch before moving on into what would become Fruita proper - a small settlement consisting of just twelve homes built on land donated by pioneer Benjamin Sitton (1795-1876). Bennie's Ranch House still stands today as a contributing property to the Fruita Historic Districts!
