In 1911, Fruita was founded by a man named Charles H. Wiegand and his wife, Emma. The original home of the Wiegands was an old adobe building on Cemetery Road. In 1935, they moved to their current location, which is a two-story log structure on County Road 82. The early history of rifle stocks in Fruita cannot be overemphasized. The first rifles ever manufactured in the town were Model 1883 Spencer rifles made by George Custer and Company. These guns were used by farmers to defend their crops from raiding Indians during the mid 1800s. Rifle stocks continued to be produced in Fruita until about 1915 when World War I began and production stopped for lack of materials. Rifle stocks resumed production after the war but were discontinued again around 1925 because of complexity in manufacturing them using today’s techniques. They slowly returned to production starting about 1970 with modern techniques and continue to this day as a popular custom item for shooters around the world! Today, rifle stocks are still produced in small quantities but are becoming more rare as more people move away from reliance on traditional firearms methods such as muzzleloaders and shotguns. The rifle stocks history in Fruita, Colorado began with the arrival of the Mormon Battalion in 1876. The battalion was a group of soldiers who traveled to Utah to help fight for the United States against Mexico. When they arrived in Fruita, they set up shop and began to purchase rifles and ammunition from local dealers. By 1880, the Mormons had left for Salt Lake City, and the rifle stock business in Fruita died out. However, it continued to be popular among residents in nearby Douglas County because of its easy access to ammo and firearms. In 1912, a new store opened up in town and continued to sell firearms until it closed down in 1951.
Fruita is a town in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Spanish word "fútbol" (football), which means "playground." Fruita was founded in 1882 by George and Lillie Weikart as a tiny farming community on the banks of the Strawberry Creek. They named their settlement after Fruita, Colorado, where they had found some fruit trees. In 1907, Fruita incorporated as a village under the name of Fruita-Nederland. From 1911 to 1912, Fruita-Nederland also served as the capital of Adams County. In 1942, when Adams County became part of Eagle County, Fruita-Nederland became its new municipal seat. In 1957, ranching interests bought most of what is now downtown Fruita and began to build ethanol production plants there. After years of debate over who should control development in downtown — local farmers or imported developers — a referendum held in 1984 allowed both groups to share control of the city center with zoning changes that limited future growth to certain types of businesses only. Fruita is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Fruita is located in the Kiowa Hills neighborhood of the city of Glenwood Springs. Fruita was founded by George W. Smith in 1907 as a ranch and farm town about 12 miles east of Glenwood Springs on U.S. Highway 6A (now US 6). Smith named the town for his fruitgrowing operation—Fruita Farms—which he operated from his home on Foothills Road between 1911 and 1917. In 1916, Fruita became part of the newly created Douglas County and had its own government under an elected mayor and six-member board of trustees. In 1920, when US 6A was extended to reach Fruita from Glenwood Springs, the town turned to highway development as its primary concern, becoming one of the first communities along that stretch of road to build bridges over irrigation canals and other water obstacles. The first Interstate 80 traffic interchange opened in nearby Carbondale in 1968; it served as a major stop for motorists traveling north to south through Douglas County. By 1990, however, Fruita's economy had begun to decline due largely to retiring residents moving away or leaving their farms for more urban living options; by 2000 it had only 2 full-time employees and no businesses other than two restaurants. However, during 2001–2002 much progress was made: fruit processing companies bought land adjacent to Fruita's Main Street for expansion; new housing projects were developed near Main Street intersections with State Route 7 (the old alignment of US 6A) and Keystone Avenue; several churches were built in central Fruita; new business expansions began upriver from downtown on Keystone Avenue near Foothills Road; and local residents banded together to form a citizen group called "Soil & Water Conservation District" which worked unsuccessfully to improve riverfront conditions around Glenwood Springs.. In 2006–2007fruit processing company GoldenWest announced plans for a $137 million project including construction of 800 jobs on 3 sites within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown including sites just east of Main Street intersections with SR 7/Keystone Ave.; this would have replaced all existing agricultural production within 10 miles (16 km) radius including most employment within 30 miles (48 km) radius Altitude: 4500 ft (−1514 m) Area irrigated: 7000 acres (−2118ha) The community has seen renewed hope since then as various groups have come together such as Soil & Water Conservation District which has been working tirelessly trying since 2006
