Fruita, Colorado is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,787 at the 2000 census. Fruita is located on the Animas River and has been a mining community since 1859. As of the 2010 census, Fruita had a population of 1,898. The first optical accessory store in Fruita opened its doors in 1916. The store was run by Mr. and Mrs. John Aiken from Omaha, Nebraska and their son Harry Aiken who later became president of American Optical Components Corporation (AOC) in 1978-1983. In 1957 local resident Clifford Waddell opened his own optical equipment store called "The Shop". Waddell's store was one of the first to offer computerized services such as enlarging images for printing or enlarging text for use on cards and leaflets. In 1976 Waddell passed away leaving his store open until 1984 when it closed again due to lack of customers; however it reopened under new ownership that year with Waddell's grandson as manager/owner until his death in 2006. Beginning in 1984 local resident Darrell Christensen started selling high quality eyeglasses direct from his optometrist office which he renamed "AO Optometry" after himself - an early adopter of digital optics technology that made eye exams more interactive than ever before! By 1990 AO Optometry had become one of the largest chain retailers of optical products in the Western United States! From their original location off Sixth Street northeast corner Main Street until moving to their current location just south of I-25 east side near Pikes Peak University on Main Street about 1985-1992 they operated outbuildings next door to Pikes Peak University library which then became known as "The Eye Store" because it was where people could come to buy lenses without having to go into school! In 1992 they moved into new building northwest corner First Avenue east side just across Frome Road from Pikes Peak University using donated land! Today American Optical Components Corporation (AOC) operates outbuildings next door to Pikes Peak University library which currently houses their administrative offices
