They are poverty free (for those who can find affordable housing), Postal Service delivery drivers (available 24/7!), participates actively in civic organizations (including being mayor since 2007) AND supports renewable energy initiatives (especially wind power!). In short; we love our community just as much today as we did when we first moved here more than 25 years ago!!!

Fruita is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. Fruita was founded in 1871 by George W. Brown and John H. Gooding as a cattle market town. The name "Fruita" means "fruitful." The town was laid out in 1871 by George W. Brown and John H. Gooding after they bought land north of the present-day city of Greeley from Pueblo Chieftain Francisco Vallejo for $1,000+. In 1877, the railroad arrived and shortened the journey from Denver to Greeley from days to hours; this allowed for more people to move into Fruita and made it an agricultural center with fruit orchards stretching along both sides of the tracks. In 1926, Fruita erected its first school building which still stands today on Main Street near its current water tower (now used as a church). That same year, Fruita became one of the first towns in Weld County to become part of the newly formed communities of Commerce City and Northglenn. In 1951, when Weld County merged with neighboring Gunnison County, Fruita became one of six rural municipalities within Gunnison Township (the other five being Holyoke, Montrose Junction, Rifle Valley, Red Lodge and Wellington). Fruita was founded in 1907 by pioneers, Ike and Lillie Jorgensen. The Jorgensens were the first people to set up a permanent home in Fruita, Colorado. They started a grocery store and restaurant called the farm stand, which served fresh produce from their garden. In 1916, they opened a post office in Fruita. The family has operated the business ever since. In 1937, Ike Jorgensen passed away and his wife Lillie took over the grocery store and restaurant. She continued to operate them until her death in 1975. After her death, the business was run by her children until it was sold to businessman Sam Hildebrandt in 1984. He kept it running as an independant business until 2009 when he decided to sell it to developer Bill Joyner Jr.
