Fruita, Colorado is a town located in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Fruita was founded by pioneers in 1874. The community became the county seat of Mesa County in 1907 and remained so until 1959 when it moved to Pueblo. Fruita grew up on a small farmstead that consisted of a few hundred acres of land with some irrigated crops and orchards. When the first settlers arrived they were looking for a place to build their homes and explore what was happening in this new area of the country. They found that there wasn't much available yet but they did find some good land for farming including sections for corn, beans, wheat and potatoes. In 1874 two men named George Davenport and John Shields came across this new land which included about 100 acres (40 ha). They started cultivation and soon had four children born: James A., Harry B., Minnie M.,"and Everett W." The first store opened in Fruita on October 17th 1870 by Jno Cramer who operated from an old adobe building on Ute Creek Road near present day Shea Boulevard. The early years were tough but as time went on things got better with more people moving into the community and Buena Vista irrigation water being brought through from Pueblo making life easier for farmers like those at Fruita. By 1902 over 50% of all agricultural production took place within five miles (8 km) of where it happened - just outside Fruita itself! This growth continued until World War II when most residents left due to shortages caused by war-time rationing etcetera.. Nowadays there are many businesses operating in Fruita including several banks, two restaurants/cafés/bars, three churches (one Pentecostal), three schools - one high school and one middle school - plus various other uses such as offices, residences and sheds used by local farmers during summerstime when no crop is grown!
