Fruita, Colorado is a town in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Fruita was founded in 1868 when a group of white men from Denver decided to settle an area that had been disputed between the Pikes Peak and Aspen mountain ranges. The name "Fruita" is derived from the Rocky Mountains and means "the place where fruit trees grow." Fruita began as a small farming community with only 10 residents in 1870. The first store was built on First Street in 1871 by J.L. Armstrong and his brother-in-law, Hiram Higginson. By 1880, Fruita had a post office and two churches - one Baptist and one Methodist - as well as nine stores and two residences. In 1881, William Painter opened the first grocery store in Fruita with six shelves of groceries including flour, milk, butter, eggs, sugar cane juice (from the local sugar mill), cigars and cigarettes. By 1890 there were 24 businesses in Fruita with a total population of over 300 people; some of these included Armour & Co., which became the largest employer after World War II; Fidelity National Bank; Sperry Gypsum Company; Ransom Hardware Company; Gertrude Latham's Clothing Store; Wernher von Braun's Laboratory for Aeronautics during World War II; Harry Noyes' Druggist Shop (later part of PepsiCo); George Weiser's Dairy (later part of Safeway); John Beecham's Mercantile emporiums (later part of Sears Roebuck & Co.) In 1920 Fruita had its own school system which included three schools -grades K-12th grade: Edison Elementary School grades 1-3rd/4th grades: Harrison Middle School grades 4-6th grades: Mrs. Swensongrade 7th grade: For Whom It May Concern High School). In 1924 students from neighboring towns formed Montrose Township to annex parts of Arapahoe County while continuing to use fruit land for their schools purposes until 1959 when they seceded to form Fruita Township again once more
Fruita, Colorado was founded in 1871 by George W. Sleeper and his family. The Sleeper family operated a small grocery store in the town until 1915 when they purchased the present-day Fruita Hotel. In 1916, they built the first post office in Fruita. The Sleeper family continued to operate their business until 1979 when it was sold to the Colorado Municipal Telecommunications Authority (CMTA) who now manage it as a state government owned telecommunications center.
