The history of gun magazines in Fruita, Colorado can be traced back to the early 1900s. At that time, the town was a small farming community and there were no major firearms manufactures in the area. However, there were several small businesses that produced pistols and shotguns. One of these businesses was The Gun Shop, which operated from 1902-1910. The Gun Shop was owned by Franklin W. “Frank” Griggs Jr., who also served as mayor from 1907-1911. In addition to his business activities, Frank also taught rifle shooting at the nearby Western Springs School from 1909-1920. In 1911, The Gun Shop moved to its current location on State Street in Fruita. This move happened shortly after they became the first business in Fruita to offer handgun sales online through their website. From 1912-1966, The Gun Shop manufactured both handguns and rifles for local hunters and pursuitsmen. In 1936, Frank Griggs passed away and his son Franklin Jr., took over the business operations until he died in 1978. From 1978-1983, the shop belonged to his grandson Franklin III before it was acquired by gun manufacturer Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc.. The Business switched hands again in 1994 when Sturm Ruger merged with another firearms manufacturer (H&R Arms) and ownership changed hands once again within 6 months! Currently, The Gun Shop is run by employees of Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc..
Fruita, Colorado is a small town located in Rocky Mountain National Park. The population was 797 as of the 2010 census. Fruita is known for its natural beauty and serene location in the mountains. The community has a variety of businesses including a post office, grocery store, bank, motel, and several restaurants. It also has two schools - Fruita Elementary School and Fruita High School - which serve the town's residents. The first people to live in what is now Fruita were Native American tribe members who lived there before white settlers arrived in 1859. In 1870, John Evans started farming land around what is now Fruita and set up shop in a cabin he had built himself. By 1880, Evans had moved his operation to what is now the east side of town on Lawndale Road. He named his farm "Fruita" after the fruit trees that grew along his property. In 1902, when Rocky Mountain National Park was established, selectmen from towns near by decided to move into the park and establish themselves there. One suchselectman was Wm Sargent who began buying land around each of his townsite visitors' campsites so that they could erect their own homes without having to worry about getting together money for such an endeavor. Eventually all of these different municipalities pooled their resources together to buy land surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park so that people could build homes without having to worry about paying for it themselves

Fruita, Colorado was founded in 1867 by James W. Sutherlin and his wife, Susie. The community is located on the Uncompahgre River in western Colorado. It was named for Fruita Creek which flows through the town. The first post office in Fruita opened in 1880. The first store was established in 1887 and the first school was built in 1889. The first street was assigned to the town in 1896 and it was renamed Main Street after local dignitary J.W. Sutherlin Jr.. In 1912, a water system was installed within Fruita and a library be constructed in 1914-15. In 1922, Fruita became one of thirteen towns incorporated as Larimer County when it was created from parts of Weld County. In 1933, a new hospital/medical center/nursing Home were built within the limits of Fruita and they are still used today as a healthcare facility with patients from all over Larimer County being treated there at various times during their lives or while they are recovering from surgery or other health issues. The second most recent addition to our Municipal History - since 2002 - is our now fruitless but much loved Art Gallery! Located just off Main Street across from our Municipal building (formerly known as “the old courthouse”), this lovely space features original artwork dating back to at least 1907 by some of the early settlers of Fruita including James Sutherlin & son John Witherspoon (1856-1937). Over time we gradually acquired more equipment, displays and programming – until finally we got around to opening up shop…in earnest! We hope you enjoy your visit!
