Fountain, Colorado is a town located in Routt County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1867. The first post office in Fountain was established in 1869. The name of the town originated from a local stream called Fountain Creek which flowed through it. Fountain is part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area and is home to PepsiCo's headquarters as well as other major companies including Mastercard and Intel Corporation. In addition to its downtown area, Fountain has several small towns that are also significant economic engines within their communities. These include Aspen Hill and Thornton Heights, both of which have thriving businesses that support larger roles within their rural areas. The history of Fountain can be traced back to when some men walked off the farm into what would become known as Fountain Valley. Named for the creek that ran through it, this region became one of the most productive farming districts in western Colorado due to its fertile soil and ample water resources. By 1870, there were three churches in Fountain Valley - one Methodist and two Presbyterian - along with a school and two stores/cafeteria buildings. The community began rapid growth thanks largely to new irrigation systems brought about by construction projects funded by businessman John Dutton Jr., who donated land east of Lake Mead for an expressway connecting Denver with Aurora via Boulder City (laterDenver). In 1908, when Denver Mayor James Haggerty dedicated a parkland area northeast of downtown containing "a picturesque view looking down upon [Fountain] village", fountain residents quickly erected a modest wooden bridge over Rittenhouse Creek just east of Main Street carrying traffic between Park Avenue (now Court Avenue) on the north side and First Avenue on the south side across Mesa Lake before being replaced by an modern steel drawbridge completed in 1959! This little-known event helped solidify Fountain's reputation as one of America's most vibrant cities during its early years; indeed – until recently – none other than then-Mayor Haggerty himself had stood atop Mount Rushmore watching motorists zip by beneath his watchful eye! In 1965, after years spent planning various aspects of what would become Interstate 25 (I-25), President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation authoring construction without actually laying out any roadbeds! In fact – until recently – I-25 never actually crossed through or even passed near Crested Butte or Leadville during its entire length! All those miles “on our wrong side” were made possible thanks primarily to US Highway 611 which runs concurrent bisecting both towns just beyond Keystone Lake while providing access from southbound I-25 northward all the way to Durango! Today’s(and future) I-25 corridor begins approximately where current US 611 leaves I-25 nearly 10 miles west & 8 miles long… omitting only 2 ½ miles outside Monument National Monument!! Notwithstanding this shortcoming… engineers continueTo hammer out optimum routing plans for this vital interstate with resultant increased commerce & employment opportunities throughout much portions Of Southern Colorado!!! To date they have identified over $27 Billion dollars worth OF development potential associated with Interstates 25 thru 29 !! How did we get here? Why aren’t we more like everyone else? It has a total area of 34.4 square miles (86.8 km²), of which 33.2 square miles (85.1 km²) is land and 0.6 square mile (2.1 km²) (0.13%) is water.[citation needed] The town was named for the Indian trail that led to Fort Collins from the east in 1876 and passed through Fountain on its way out.[2] The first post office was established in 1880, and it became a city in 1907.[3] Fountain's history begins with early pioneers who arrived by wagon train in 1876: George Washburne bought 2 acres (0.81 km²) of land east of the current courthouse site in what is now Fountain on December 15, 1876,[4][5] and erected a cabin known as "Washburne’s Cabin".[6][7] He soon met John Ritter who had also come from Illinois by wagon train[8][9][10]. They developed an agricultural enterprise together called the Washburne Cattle Company[11], which produced milk, meat and eggs for local consumption until it went bankrupt in 1902[12]. In 1882 Sheriff James Kelling appointed George Waddell as Constable to supplant William Hulten who had been elected sheriff two years earlier after serving as recorder of deeds for much of western Routt County[13]. From 1889 to 1893 Jens Christensen owned most of the eastern half of present-day Fountain but sold off most of his holdings to Edwin Lister in 1895 because he could not keep up with sales made by others such as Harry Sudden & Son grocery store across Main Street west of downtown[14]; Lister built a hotel near today's courthouse site called The Lodge beginning service on October 9, 1896; during prohibition days this building served as jail cells for alcoholics awaiting trial or being transferred from other jurisdictions under Washington law sanctions against possession or sale without a license; on July 1, 1920 neon signs announced that Prohibition ended effective that date when state law reverted back to original pre-Prohibition regulations governing liquor production & transportation; What used to be downtown now contains several small businesses including One Stop Gourmet Grocery Store run by Donny McCloskey since 1978; On November 3rd 1886 about 100 people attended dedication ceremonies for one mile long road leading northward from Main Street southward past present day Keystone Lake Park before turning northeast along Center Road coming into town Limits just southwest therefrom within walking distance both then & now thenceforth called "FountainRoad" over which Federal troops patrolled intermittently during World War II sorties over nearby Keystone Lake becoming known locally as "The Wall" thereafter renamed again [15]: Today part of US 26 runs concurrently thru Fountaintown limits forming what would have been River Road if City Limits wasn't reinstated following court ruling In 1897 Jens Christensen sold all his holdings except his remaining 16 acres east side along present day Main street west side between Keystone Lake Park and downtown business district to Amedee Matson who organized what would becomethe Denver–Aurora Railroad Company Limited Partnership doing business as Denver Aurora Railroad Company starting operations January 1st 1898 hauled goods wagons using power available only during daylight hours until May 6th 1918 when line became electric operations commenced single track gauge due largely to Battle Creek Dam ArcLight Photographic Supply Co having leased rightmost trackage lessening engineer’s workload considerably thereby enabling company To open normal banking hrs 7am - 11pm weekdays excluding holiday periods
