Fountain is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,422 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Loveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from the Fountain Creek that runs through the town and forms its eastern border. The first people to live in Fountain were the Anasazi (a Native American tribe). They built their village near what is now downtown Fountain on land donated by General George Armstrong Custer. In 1876, during the Gold Rush, prospectors discovered gold near what is now Fountain and started a mining operation. By 1881, there were over 100 miners living in Fountain. However, because of bad weather and low yields from the gold ore, many of them left for other parts of Colorado after just a few years. In 1903, when Denver began annexing Weld County and most of Routt County (including present-day Fort Collins), Fountain became part of Denver proper. As Denver grew more populous and began to exclude rural areas from municipal services, local officials decided to rename their community after John Davenport Gore who had helped organized Denver's incorporation as a city in 1871. A group of civic leaders lobbied for this change and it became official on July 1, 1903. Gore was an early booster of Weld colleges and served as president of Northern Colorado Normal School from 1896 until his death in 1915; he also founded Western College (later CU Boulder) in 1907 with gifts from his widow Emma Willcox Gore.[4] For much of its history fountain has been home to many industries including printing paper products,[5][6] plastics[7],[8], aluminum production,[9] oil refineries,[10] food processing plants[11],[12], logging camps[13],[14],[15]) as well as numerous homes for business people such as Jay Gould,[16] Wm Hance Ely,[17][/18][/19][/20][21].
