It is named after Fountain Creek, which flows through it and joins the Animas River near Pueblo. Fountain was founded in 1871 by settlers who arrived from Illinois and Kansas Territory. This project was completed in 1903 and brought about much rejoicing within Fountain itself as well as throughout Denver! In 1915, during World War I, Fountain assisted with military efforts by providing food and shelter to soldiers stationed there. After the war ended, many families moved back into Fountain while others continued to live there until they could find permanent homes elsewhere inColorado or outside of United States borders (eastern Canada being one such example). In 1951, when Interstate 25 bypassed town limits east of State Highway 14 (now called Kipling Road), fountain's status changed somewhat- its ZIP code became 80125 instead of 80122!. Today however most people still refer to themselves simply as "Fountain". The post office closed in 1978 but mail continues to be delivered via courier service today!

In 2000, voters approved annexation by Fort Collins, creating a new city with its own government and mayor.
