Fountain is a census-designated place and Micropolitan Statistical Area in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction–Aurora, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fountain began as a small community in 1887 on the east side of Interstate 25 near present-day I-25 and US Routes 22 and 287. The name comes from two waterfalls nearby: Fountain Creek and Fountain Hill. In 1912, the community became an integral part of Grand Junction by annexing part of Aurora. The first post office opened in 1888 in what is now Fountain Creek Rancho de la Union between Denver and Boulder Streets. A second post office operated until 1907 on U.S. Route 287 northeast of present day I-25 between Switzer Street (now North Broadway) and Lamar Boulevard (now South Broadway). The third post office operated from 1911 to 1914 on East First Avenue east of Interstate 25 between Larimer Road (later U S Highway 6) and Cherry Drive (now Butler Boulevard). In 1917, Fountain was incorporated as a town with a population of about 100 people. That year, the Anschutz Electric Corporation constructed three hydroelectric generators onsite at Three Forks Creek Dam which produced enough electricity to power all of Fountain for four days while being used for irrigation purposes only; this created some controversy because it would have been more efficient to use hydropower developed downstream at Glenwood Springs or Telluride instead. In 1923 when Anschutz sold its share in the dam operation to Basin Electric Company, fountain's population had reached 350 people living primarily along Third Street between Carson Road (later State Highway 290) and Elmira Drive outside downtown Grand Junction proper; business operations were moved into new buildings located southwestward on Third Street across from Cannonball Lake Reservoir until 1975 when they relocated back into downtown where they currently operate out Campus Gateway Park next door to White Sands Missile Range Another major employer during that time was Alcoa which built several heavy industries including aluminum smelting plants along Third Street around today's White Sands Missile Range before moving its production underground beginning in 1957 One notable innovation during this time period was Alcoa's development of "the Electrolux home" which featured electric heating/cooling capabilities through ductwork running throughout homes This innovative technology continued through most subsequent decades until discontinuation in 1976 due largely to increased competition from central air conditioning systemsHQEKA
