Fountain is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Aurora metropolitan area. The creek and valley were named for two large waterfalls which cascade down from the mountain to join the creek near its source. One falls over a large rock pillar while the other has a smaller but more impressive waterfall on its left side that cascades into a wide pool below. These waterfalls are also popular tourist attractions. The first settlers in this area were farmers who started out living on farms near Beaver Lake in eastern Weld County. When they discovered oil potential in what is now Fountain they decided to make their way to this location and began drilling wells there in 1892. By 1907 it was known as " Oil Springs" because of the presence of crude oil and gas reserves hereabouts. In 1912, when oil production increased around Fort Collins, new landowners erected homes on hills overlooking Oil Springs with views of both falls and reservoir (later renamed Mesa Verde National Park). Highway 16 was constructed through these hills providing easy access to these wellheads for drivers heading east or west towards Fort Collins or Boulder; today's highway 8 follows much of its original route including some old roadbeds where 16 metamorphosed into today's 8 just south of downtown Fountain

Fountain is a small town in Grand County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Fountain first settled in 1876 and has grown steadily since then. It became a municipality in 1984. The community of Fountain was founded by George Fountain and his family on the west side of the San Juan River in 1876. George had come overland from Kansas with wagonloads of goods to help found the new town and he named it after himself - Fountain City. By 1886, when it had a population of 100 people, Fountain had become an important transportation hub for the region because it served as a crossing point for two main routes: The Santa Fe Trail and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. In 1912, when Grand County was created, Fountain became part of it; however, its status as a municipality remained unchanged until 1984. In 1924, during World War II, the USAAF built several airfields around Grand County; one of these was located near where Fountain now stands. With so many aircraft based here and so much aviation activity taking place throughout the war years (including fighter planes flying over Grand Canyon), fountain quickly gained some notoriety as “the home base” for Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilots from nearby Longmont Airport. Since becoming a municipality in 1984, fountain's economy has been diversified with fields such as manufacturing ( predominantly textiles) taking hold but also include health care (particularly dental services), recreation (both parkour and mountaineering activities) as well as professional services including engineering consulting and architecture design work.
