The town of Fountain was founded in 1876 by two brothers, George and Alfred Fountain. The brothers started a small gunsmith shop in a small building on Main Street. Over time, the business grew and they moved to larger quarters on First Avenue. In 1916, they opened a branch store in Westminster. In 1951, they merged with another small business to form The Fountain Armory Company. From 1951-1968, the company made rifles for both national and international customers. During this time period, it also produced pistols and shotguns. In 1968, the company went out of business due to economic difficulties. However, it reopened under new management in 1984 and continues as a successful firearms retailer today with over 100 employees!

Fountain was founded in 1876 by General James H. Grant and his ranch hands on land that now includes downtown Fountain and parts of South Park and North Park. The town became a city in 1925, but it reverted to a village status until 1959 when it became an incorporated town again under the name Fountain. Fountain is located at (39.560902, -104.964853). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of which is land. The climate in this area is moderate to warm (Köppen Climate Classification "MV", abbreviated "Cfb"). As of the census of 2000, there were 684 people, 209 households, and 158 families residing in the town. The population density was 12 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 252 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). It was founded in 1875 by Michael and Emma Neely as a small community of about 25 residents. The name "Fountain" comes from the nearby Animas River which forms part of the town's boundaries. The first store in Fountain opened its doors on Main Street in 1875 and became one of the most popular businesses in town. Within a few years, other stores followed suit and Fountain quickly became an important commercial center for the area. In 1911, the city of Greeley incorporated as part of a larger plan to increase economic opportunities for towns within Weld County. As Greeley grew more prosperous, it began to invest in new infrastructure and develop new industries such as lumbering and manufacturing. This growth led to increased demand for space in Fountain and developers began seeking to build more upscale neighborhoods within the limits of their developments. Due to this development, many residents opted to move away from Fountain over the ensuing years. However, some 1946 descendants of those who originally settled here continue to call themselves "Fountainites." Today, Fountain remains an important community with strong cultural ties to its birthplace – both physically and historically - but it also boasts modern amenities such as a library and several businesses that cater specifically to its resident population.
