Fountain, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 939 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, Fountain had a population of 1,451. Fountain was founded in 1879 by Jews who left Kansas to come to the new country. In 1892, it became an incorporated town and was renamed for James Fenton Fountain II (1849-1925), a Colonel in the Union Army and mayor of Omaha, Nebraska from 1912 to 1916. In 1907 it had its first schoolhouse; on July 20th of that year it also had its first post office. The population of Fountain grew rapidly until World War I when many residents left for military service or other unknown reasons; by 1920 only 6 people lived in Fountain proper and 5 in the unincorporated towns around it. However, during prohibition years many people came back totown because they could not get alcohol outside and thus were exempt from Prohibition taxes. During World War II many residents decided to stay away from war because they were concerned about rationing food which would affect their standard of living if they returned home at some point during the conflict; however some did return after being called up for military duty (e.g., Leonard Pfeffer).
