The first people to settle in what is now Fountain were Indian traders from the Pueblo of Taos who arrived around 1811. They named their community after a small stream that ran through their territory. A post office was established in 1814 and the first store was opened in 1817 by J.H. Scudder and his brother-in-law, Amos Judd. One of the most important pioneers in Fountain was George Hargrave who came to live there in 1878 and started Green Hills cattle ranching operations which would later become known as Hargrave Rancho Antelope II and then Open Range Rancho Adobe National Monument. In 1907, when Colorado became an state, Fountain became its seat with Cyrus Sayers appointed as its first mayor Fountain grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the railroad line between Greeley and Aurora which made it a popular commuting town for people working in those cities. The growth continued into the 20th century when local industries such as mining, dairy farming, lumber production and manufacturing emerged along with new housing developments such as Granite Park Drive and Crestline Drive which are still considered some of Fountain's most famous streets today During World War II many residents served in various military roles including serving on bomber aircraft carriers or taking part in combat overseas In 1951 Clyde Ritchie founded Ritchie’s department store located on Granite Park Drive which anchored much of what has since been called "the shopping district" of Fountain As well as other stores throughout Weld County over the years including Merchants Bank Plaza across from Interstate 25 north of downtown Greeley . In recent years many businesses have closed but these historic storefronts remain preserved within walking distance of many residents making it easy to get your hands on some greatlocal history
