The first post office opened in Fountain on December 10, 1880. In 1969, the community erected a monument to local servicemen killed or wounded while serving abroad during World War II.

Fountain is located on the eastern edge of the Gunnison Mountains and it is bordered by Asotin to the north, Pueblo to the east, Canon City to the south and La Plata to the west. The first settler in Fountain was George Waggoner. He built a log cabin in 1846. A post office called Fountain was established in 1847 and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first store in Fountain opened on Main Street in 1865. The community became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and irrigation systems. In 1926, two major accidents caused extensive damage to local agriculture which inhibited growth for several years. In 1937, a new Methodist church was completed and dedicated with local farmers contributing $1,500 for its construction. Located off of Main Street between North First Avenue and North Second Avenue, it served as an unofficial meeting place for farmers from throughout Mesa County until 1953 when that section of town became part of Canon City
