In 1871, J.P. Fountain purchased 2,000 acres of land upstream from present-day Fountain on what is today known as east side Street in what is now Alamosa County. The purchase marked the beginning of Fountain’s growth as a agricultural center that would soon become one of Colorado’s most populous communities. Fountain quickly became known for its fertile land and excellent climate for agriculture; it was also an important stop on stagecoaches traveling between Denver and Fort Collins (then called Boulder). By 1901, there were over 350 businesses in downtown Fountain with a population of 535 residents! The city saw significant growth during World War II due to its location near Ft Carson Army Base; however, after the war ended came economic hard times that led to some lay offs among fountain’s workforce/the loss of many jobs throughout downtown during much of the 1970s through 1980s especially%. However, Downtown fountain experienced another resurgence in recent years thanks to new development along East Side Street corridor which opened up more opportunities for businesses within walking distance from residences making Fountains once again one of Colorados most vibrant neighborhoods economically speaking! Fountain was founded in 1868 by Major General James H. Wilson and Colonel George B. McClellan as a summer resort for the high-ranking military and their families. The first hotel, called the Mount Snow Resort, opened in 1870. In 1875, Fountain became an incorporated town with a population of about 150 people. The first post office was opened in 1880. In 1912, the United States Postal Service merged with Colorado National Bank to form First Colorado National Bank. Fountain grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location on the edge of an agricultural depression that struck many Western towns at that time. In addition, Fountain's rich spa waters were popular among tourists and locals alike for bathing and relaxation purposes. However, economic difficulties began to take hold in the 1940s as World War II unfolded and demand for transportation decreased after America entered hostilities against Nazi Germany In 1949, Fountain voters passed a resolution proclaiming themselves "the Citizens of Fountain" in order to maintain their city's independence from government control. The next year saw significant changes when Mayor Fenton Jinks resigned in order to become colonel commanding American Forces Europe (AFE). With Jinks' departure came new leadership including his brother-in-law/fellow war veteran Harry Calkins who served as mayor until 1966; then Nels Sorenson who held that position until 1974 when he was succeeded by his son Norma Sorenson The 1990s were another difficult era for Fountain as crime rates increased along with increasing traffic congestion caused by an expanding ski industry . However, some progress has been made such as new public works projects like Kelley Park which opened in 1992; revitalizing downtown areas such as Main Street between Seventh Avenue and Arapahoe Road ; and creating new trails like County Park Boulevard . Overall, however , much remains undone despite several $30 million dollar investments over 10 years
