Fountain is a small town in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains, located east of Grand Junction, Colorado. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Fountain was founded in 1849 by John Fountain and his family as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The post office was first established in 1855 and changed its name to Fountain in 1876. In 1907, the post office moved from its original location to a new building on State Street near what is now called Fountain High School. In 1951, Fountain became part of El Paso County and adopted an official name change to Fountain City. The economy of Fountain has been mostly based on agriculture with some light manufacturing and services employment since at least the early 20th century. More recently, factory production has shifted away from Colorado towards Mexico and other parts of North America due to increased economic opportunities there. The community's attractions include two parks- Lake Park Recreation Area which includes a playground, amphitheater/festival area, fishing pier, interpretive trailhead and picnic areas as well as a water park - as well as three golf courses: one for amateur players (Hemispherical) operated by El Paso County Parks; one for professional golfers (National Golf Links), operated by PGA TOUR member Champions Tour; and one for amateurs (Willow Creek OpenCourse) operated by Coloradans for Coloradans club sports organization "Athletic Club Boulder". Fountain is located in the city of Colorado Springs, and it was named after the Fountain of Youth. The fountain was built in 1876 and it has been visited by many people over the years.
