With this discovery came growth for the town as people started arriving from all over to claim their shares of the richest veins in Colorado! By 1899, there were more than 100 residents living in Fountain and mining operations were ongoing until 1951 when production ceased due to low prices forsilver ore. During its early years, Fountain had several businesses including a hotel and grocery store which remain open today. Several schools also operated during this time including: one serving children up until age 12; one serving grades 1-8; one serving grades 9-12; an engine shop; twosmiths shops; two2 wheel drive wagons used by farmers to transport goods to market; a blacksmith shop; two hotels (one operating until 1957); three churches - First Presbyterian Church opened in 1905 (now defunct); Second Presbyterian Church open 1907-1909 (now defunct) ; Baptist church opened 1912-14 (closed down after bombings occurred in 1975 & 1977). In 1958, when Fountain incorporation took place it selectd "Fountain" as its nameakespite being settled only since 1876! evolving into become an established tourist destination with many different events taking place throughout its history such as basketball games between local high school teams or the Miss Universe pageant held at nearby Englewood High School yearly! several restaurants have been built along side downtown making dining choices easier while accommodating larger groups! One development that has taken place recently is called "The Village" which includes apartments/condominiums overlooking downtown with laundry facilities/parking available on site!
