Fountain began as a settlement on site of what is now the Walmart Supercenter and continues to be settled primarily by farmers. By 1905, there were 20 businesses in town and some 2,000 residents. In 1919, water from an underground spring was discovered at the edge of town and soon water fountains were being erected throughout downtown to serve the people who lived there until 1957 when it became apparent thatacio would not be built in downtown because of funding concerns and so fountain became known as "the fountain behind Ike's." In 1969, the Coloradans for Water Quality incorporated to help advance water quality issues in Fountain and other towns across Arapahoe County. Today Fountain has several parks including one with a theme park inspired by Disneyland which opened in 2007; The Park at Cedar Hill; two high schools (Fountain High School & Westminster Christian Academy); three churches (First Baptist Church Resurrection Valley Chapel & First Presbyterian Church), two warehouses (Walgreens & Pacific Lumber Company), one factory (Ike's Pizza), one farmstead (Eaton Farms), four cemeteries (.Armstrong Cemetery #1., .Quinn Cemetery #2., .Willow Creek Cemetery #3., .Shane Cemetery) - making it one of largest communities within 100 miles of Denver or Boulder! Fountain also has its own school district: Arapahoe County Schools which includes all of rural ArapahoCo including Fountain

Fountain grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources; starting with a smelter in 1850, the city built several factories and mills until it became one of the largest industrial cities in America by 1900. By 1910, it had reached its peak as an economic center with a population of over 100,000 people. However, during World War I and II Fountain's economy declined as war production moved away from agriculture to munitions manufacturing or steel production. In the 1960s and 1970s fountain began to experience growth again thanks to development around Interstate 25 and new highway projects connecting downtown with other municipalities within Montrose County
