In the early 1800s, Fort Morgan was a strategically important stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was built in 1824 and became an important post during the Mexican-American War. It played an important role in engagements such as the Battle of Buena Vista and Siege of Fort Wise. In 1868, Fort Morgan was renamed Fort Sill after General Andrew Jackson’s victory over Mexico in the Battle of Buena Vista. When America won its independence from Great Britain, many people wanted to keep British influence out of Colorado. The first step was to protect our soil from British invaders. So, in 1794, Congress authorized the construction of a fortress at Fort Morgan to protect against any future attacks by Britain. The fort served as a garrison until it was transferred to civilian control in 1825. The fort Played an important role during the Mexican-American War because it guarded both sides’ supply lines and defended against attack from Apache Indian warriors. After the war ended, most of the military functions were taken over by Civilian Authorities including administrating justice, maintaining law and order, conducting elections and providing for public education within the limits set by Congress. In 1861, when Colorado became a state,Fort Morgan came under state jurisdiction and continued to serve as an armory until 1886 when it reverted back to federal government control

In 1876, the Colorado Territory was created from the eastern half of the Mexican state of Coahuila. The territory stretched from east to west and included most of modern-day Fort Morgan, including present-day Colo. City. In 1902, an act was passed which authorized the purchase of firearms by the military for use in law enforcement within territorial limits. That year, fortists donated shotguns to help with this effort. The first rifle sale took place on October 15th, 1902. On November 3rd, 1902, a regulation was passed authorizing officers of the military to sell rifles and pistols at sheriff's auctions throughout the territorial limits for cash or goods necessary for their effective work as peacekeepers and county sheriffs were given authority to accept such sales without requiring bids from civilians. On January 1st 1903, a bill was introduced into Congress which would have granted all residents within Fort Morgan municipal boundaries automatic civil rights as citizens thereof until they applied for citizenship through government officials; however this measure failed to be passed into law due to opposition from local politicians and civil rights organizations who felt that it would privilegeFort Morgan residents over other residents in the area. The current structure of FortMorgan dates back to 1888 when builders began work on additions to the original fortress designed by Colonel John Ewing of New Mexico Territory Headquarters Built primarily for storage purposes only, this single-story adobe building became one of Colo’s most popular tourist attractions due to its unique architecture which has been largely preserved today despite many attempts by vandals over time! Today’s visitor center offers exhibits about both FtMorny’s history as well as its role within our state economy today

Fort Morgan is located in the U.S. state of Colorado and lies on the banks of the Rio Grande River. The fort was built in 1873 by General James H.
