During the Mexican–American War (1846-1848), Fort Morgan served as an artillery battery for General Santa Anna’s army. In 1849, it became used as a prison for Confederate sympathizers during the Gold Rush period. After Mexico ceded California to United States control, Fort Morgan reverted to US military control and functioned as an arsenal until its abandonment in 1870. The remains of Fort Morgan are today located within the boundaries of Telluride National Park.
