Fort Morgan was founded in 1876 on the site of a previous fortification built by the Colorado Volunteers during the Mexican-American War. The fort was initially named Fort Lyon, but was renamed for General John A. Fremont after his victory at San Juan Hill in 1847. The fortifications at Fort Morgan were designed to protect settlers from Apache and Navajo war bands and their raids into adjacent counties. The first permanent guardtower and barracks were erected in 1879. In 1895, a powder magazine and other support buildings were added to the fortification complex. In 1912, Fort Morgan became an Army post under command of the Western Command. It remained an Army post until it was decommissioned in 1945. The fortifications are now open to visitors as part of the nearby Golden Spike National Monument.
