The downtown area is the largest concentration of population in the county and includes much of downtown Pueblo as well as other areas around town such as North Park and South Park.
Fort Morgan is a small town in Weld County, Colorado. It was founded in 1867 as Fort Kiowa, and later renamed Fort Morgan after General George Armstrong Custer. The fort served as the seat of government for Weld County until 1912. The post office at Fort Morgan was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1934. Today, the only remaining structure from the original fort is a small museum located within its walls. The first Europeans to visit what is now Weld County were members of the 14th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army who traveled through central Colorado on their way to ranching operations near Greeley in November 1864. Upon arriving at Ft. Morgan on December 10th they reported that "the country about this place looks very wild and desolate." After battle with Kit Carson some settlers had difficulty getting food or supplies enough to sustain them so they set up shop around what is now downtown Fort Morgan which included trading posts with other settlements throughout the region. By late 1863 there were several stores, including one operated by Nicholas Long (1814-1892) along Main Street just east of today's courthouse Square. In 1864 a post office was erected here under authority of General Order No 1 from Washington D .C . Charles Goodyear (1815-1906) served as Postmaster from 1889-1900 On January 9th 1865 an order arrived from President Andrew Johnson directing Generals Sherman and Grant to take possession of all Indian Territory west of Arkansas River pending treaty negotiations between that government and Dakota Sioux Indians known as Custer's Scouts under Major General Russell Averill McIntosh (1822-1900). Just before noon on January 11th 1865 orders arrived ordering all military forces eastward across Kansas line into Indian Territory pending agreement being reached Buy orders came direct from Ulysses S Grant dated January 13th stating "all hostile Indians must be put down whether they are Standing Rock Sioux Chiefs or not" After much discussion among officers local farmers filed warrants for service against Sitting Bull totaling 875 men organized into Companies E & F Post #2 soon after these orders became effective Company H Troop commander Captain John L Whitehead took command company found Sitting Bull surrounded his village 30 miles north northwest of present day Fort Worth Texas white man supposed dead but alive held hostage by Great Sioux Nation
