The first gun target in Fort Morgan was erected in 1868, during the days of buffalo hunting. The fort's commander, Major John C. Fremont, ordered the construction of a small artillery target to be used by his troops as part of their practice drills. The target consisted of a post with two uprights and four roundshot shots placed at its base. From this location, soldiers could shoot at various targets located around the fort for practice. In 1903, the army built a larger gun target on the same site. This target was designed to represent an American Indian Sioux warrior attacking a U.S Cavalry regiment stationed at Fort Morgan. The Sioux warrior represented an important portion of Colorado folklore and history, and his attack on the white cavalry was seen as an early example of modern warfare. Today, Fort Morgan's gun targets remain one of the most popular tourist attractions in town. Visitors can enjoy driving down country roads that lead to them from Fort Morgan itself; or they can take public transportation to reach their destination from downtown Denver or other areas nearby. Fort Morgan was founded in 1867 as a military post on the edge of what is now Denver. The original fort was destroyed by a fire in 1868, and Fort Morgan was re-established in 1870 with a new garrison. The fort was renamed for Major General George Armstrong Custer in 1898, after his death during the American Civil War. From 1903 to 1907, the post served as the headquarters of Colorado State Patrol. In 1919, Fort Morgan became an infantry Training Center and Command Post for Army Infantry. It closed its doors in 1984.

Fort Morgan was founded in 1876 by United States Marines as Camp Roberts on the edge of what is now Fort Lyon National Monument. It became a post garrison in 1880 and later became an artillery battery. The fort served as a military center for the region during World War I and II. In 1957, the post was renamed Fort Morgan after Colonel John A. Magruder, who had commanded soldiers at nearby Chinle during the Mexican-American War. Fort Morgan is located along U.S $27 Highway 126 east of Pueblo and west of Canon City. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Fort Morgan has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps).[1] The town takes its name from Major General James Sibley's commandant general's station at Camp Roberts when he arrived in 1876 to take over control of Indian resistance against white settlers holdings near present day Fort Lyon National Monument.[2]

The fort played an important role in the American Civil War, being used as a supply depot and military camp. After the war ended, Fort Carson fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 1865. However, it is now a popular tourist attraction located within walking distance of downtown Fort Morgan.
