Fort Morgan, Colorado was a majorgunnery center during the early days of American gunfighting. From 1876 to 1880, Fort Morgan served as the main military installation for U.S. Army troops in western Colorado and central Mexico. The fort's guns were used extensively in the Mexican-American War (1846-1847) and in the Battle of Churubusco (1857). The first modern handguns were brought over from Europe by United States Marines at Fort Morgan in 1875. The Marine firearms were used against Apache Indians at San Jacinto (1836), but they did not enter into general use until after World War I when pistols began to be issued to cavalry and other infantry units. In 1892, Major General John Custer led his Seventh Cavalry Regiment through Fort Morgan on their way to Placer County during the Powder River Wars against the Sioux Nation. Many Native Americans encountered these white soldiers with bows and arrows; however, Custer's troopers had rifles drawn and opened fire on these unarmed civilians, killing six people and wounding more than 20 others before fleeing back into Indian Territory. This event is often cited as one of the most cowardly actions ever committed by an American soldier in combat. Over time, many new rifle companies were formed within US Army regiments throughout western Colorado; however, no genuine indigenous rifle company was established at Fort Morgan until 1906 when 2nd Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment became known as "The Buffalos." Rifle company headquarters briefly resided at Trinidad Barracks from 1907-1908 before being moved permanently to Fort Morgan proper in 1909 followingWorld War I rearmament efforts there that centered around providing heavy machine guns for troops stationed along the Mexican border area between El Paso County and Chihuahua County under Lt Colonel Clarence Darrow’s command which included 1st Battalion 10th Infantry Regiment also based at Fort Garland adjacent to Chihuahua City limits across from Juárez Barracks soon afterwards also becoming part of Majestic Armoured Corps Reorganization Plan No 3 dated 09/30/1920 plan called "Organized Frontier Forces" or simply "Fort Garland". Fort Morgan was founded in 1871 by Major General George A. Smith and the United States Army. The fort served as a base of operations for the Colorado Volunteers during the Mexican-American War, and later became part of the Fort Carson National Military Park. The fort was decommissioned in 1951, but it has been restoration and is now open to the public. The first people to live in what is now Fort Morgan were Native Americans who used its natural resources as their source of food and shelter. In 1862, Colonel James Wolk developed a new water system for Fort Morgan which improved water supplies for Colorado settlements throughout the area. In 1870, gold was discovered at Overton Gulch, making Fort Morgan an attractive target for miners searching for wealth beyond Colorado's borders. By 1880, over 1,000 people lived in Fort Morgan; most worked on local farms or mined gold until 1892 when silver began to be discovered nearby. During World War I, Fort Morgan played a critical role in defense against German aggression on the Western Front. After hostilities ended, many military personnel returned home from Europe and formed civilian militias called "Militia Act (1917)" members took up arms against Treaty of Versailles mandated draft laws that limited male enlistment to seven years old and women to six years old. On October 12th 1917 general John Pershing issued orders disbanding all militia units within ten days unless they turned over their weapons and joined army service under appropriate regulations promulgated by Department of Justice inspector general Harry Jourdanon with same deadline exempted certain classes of citizens owning land west of Denver including farmers & ranchers not engaged in agriculture & those unable or unwilling to fight due either To poverty (& disease) contracted from soldiery life) or political opinion (& cowardice). 2nd Battalion (Upper)Colorado Infantry Regiment deployed at Ft Washakie Idaho Territory during 1918 WWI after being mobilized December 1915 tentatively encamped near…Ft Washakie then moved May 16th 1916 – June 9th 1917 via wagon train across Plains Of Wyoming into this newly created irrigation area known today as Boulder Valley near Interstate 25 between Cheyenne & Arapaho National Forests

The Fort Morgan Massacre occurred on July 9, 1864, when soldiers of the United States Cavalry Regiment massacred a group of Native Americans near Fort Morgan, Colorado. The massacre has been called one of the most infamous episodes in American history.
