Fort Morgan, Colorado was the original home of the Fort Morgan Rifle Company. The company was founded in 1876 by Major George Armstrong Custer and Captain David Hays to manufacture rifles for the military. The rifle company became a part of Winchester Firearms Corporation in 1903. In 1907, they moved their manufacturing operations from Fort Morgan to Hartford, Connecticut. The rifle company's last production run took place in 1911. The first guns made at Fort Morgan were American Pattern rifled muskets which fired ball ammunition. A type of muzzleloader known as a “Powder Keg” was also developed at this location. These firearms were used by militia and cavalry units during the Mexican-American War and against Native Americans during the Gold Rush era. During World War I, Fort Morgan produced over 1 million rifles for U.S forces fighting on both sides of the conflict. Many of these rifles served with distinction in campaigns such as 1917–1918 trench warfare in France and Belgium; 1918 offensives across Germany; and 1919 offensive into Czechoslovakia under General John J Pershing’s command). After World War I ended, many of these weapons were sold off to other countries who then continued to use them in various wars until they finally fell out of use around the turn of the 21st century In 1927, Winchester Arms Corporation merged with Remington Arms Company creating what is now Remington Arms Incorporated (ROI). Fort Morgan was founded in 1849 by Major General James W. Armistead and his troops as a military outpost on the Arkansas River. The fort served as a garrison for a few years before being abandoned in 1851.
