When the first settlers arrived in what is now Fort Morgan in 1876, they were immediately drawn to the natural resources that lay within its boundaries. One of the earliest discoveries was a series of oil wells at Red Mountain. soon after, other mineral deposits were discovered in and around Fort Morgan, including coal and silver mines. As industry grew in Fort Morgan, so too did gun production. The first firearms produced here were muskets and pistols. However, rifles became increasingly popular as they could be used for hunting and self-defense. Rifle production quickly outpaced pistol production, leading to a surplus of these weapons which was later sold off to various groups throughout Colorado and beyond. One particular group who capitalized on this surplus was the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW). From 1886 onward, D&RGW began selling guns to local law enforcement officers in Fort Morgan. This gave the company an edge over competitors since it could provide quality products at a lower price point. In addition, D&RGW enjoyed some favorable public opinion due to its role in helping keep Colorado safe during times of political unrest or civil war. As a result of all this success, the company ultimately became one of the most influentialfactors within Fort Morgan’s history.

In 1870, Fort Morgan became an important trading post for the area and it was renamed Fort Morgan City in 1912. The city was eventually annexed by Denver in 1924. Today, Fort Morgan is a small town located within the bounds of the city of Denver. The history of Fort Morgan begins with the construction of the first post at this location in 1856. At that time, it was one of only two military posts on the Colorado River between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Chihuahua City, Mexico. It functioned as a supply depot for both civilian life in nearby Fort Collins and military operations against Apache Indians near Greeley. In 1870, after years of growth at Fort Morgan City due to its importance as a trading post and commercial center for southeastern Colorado Springs and northern-centralDenver, Denver decided to annex all but 1/3rd of what would become today'sFort Morgan into its jurisdiction on February 14th, 1924. The annexation created major changes not just forfortmorganbut also for surrounding communities which had been supportive of Denver throughout their incorporation into municipal boundaries over time including: easternBoulder County (now Golden), north-central Canon City (now Fountain Hills), south-central Aspen Park (now Highlands Ranch) -all incorporated during or shortly following annexation -and northeast Auraria (later Arvada). Fort Morgan is a small town located in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. It was founded in 1876 by the Cache and Arapaho Indians as a trading post on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. The post was moved to its present location in 1881 after being attacked by Mexicans. The fortification of the post began in 1884 and lasted until 1886 when it was destroyed by an Apache attack. The fortifications at Fort Morgan were important during the Mexican-American War because they protected the area from possible Indian raids. After the war, Fort Morgan continued to be used as a trading post until it closed its doors in 1902. Fort Morgan has been reincarnated several times over since it closed its doors back in 1902. In 1912, it reopened as Fort Carson National Military Park and today is home to several thousand visitors each year. In 1955, Fort Morgan was renamed Fort Logan and remains one of the most popular tourist destinations around here today. Fort Morgan was taken over by U.S. forces during the Civil War, and it again served as a military base from 1865 to 1870. The fort played an important role in the Wars of 1812 and1814, and it also became known for its production of whiskey. In 1872, Fort Morgan was abandoned due to the increasing threat posed by Apache Indians.
