In 1916, Fort Morgan mounted its first battle against Indian forces in which over 100 Carcano rifles were used. In 1945, Fort Morgan’s role as a strategic base ended when it was surrendered by the United States Army to Mexican forces. However, during these years there were also efforts made to keep the fort operational as an armory. In 1975-1976, an attempt was made to renovate the rifle range while still using some of the old equipment. However, due to budget limitations only one firing lane was renovated and it is currently not possible for customers to fire any rounds at this range without damaging it or causing injury.
Fort Morgan is located in San Miguel County, Colorado, and is the seat of San Miguel County government. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. Fort Morgan was founded in 1867 by soldiers from the 1st Infantry Regiment of the United States Army under command of General Zachary Taylor. The fort served as a military garrison until 1889, when it was converted into a school and post office. In 1916, Fort Morgan became home to Colorado's only airfield and continued to serve as an airport until 1958. The town of Fort Morgan developed around the fort and school during its early years. The first post office opened in 1868, and the first settlers arrived in 1870. The first store opened in 1872, followed by a sawmill in 1875. By 1886, Fort Morgan had become a village with a two-storey brick courthouse and three businesses including a blacksmith shop and carpenter shop. During World War I, Fort Morgan played an important role as an air field for Colorado Springs Air Force Base; however, due to its proximity to Mexican territory it saw little combat useage over the war period. In 1924–1925 Gordon Bedingfield donated land east of town for what would eventually become University Park; however, not much progress was made on developing this property until after his death in 1951 wife Elizabeth built him his private retreat there called "Bedingfield Ranch". In 1957–1958 Interstate 25 crossed through town forming an interchange near downtown that still exists today; business declined thereafter which caused some residents to move out into surrounding towns such as Aspen or Grand Junction where they could find more prosperous conditions than those found withinFortMorgan itself. However since 2000 new development has returned with increased job opportunities within nearby cities like Aspen or Grand Junction thus reversing this trend once again rejuvenating local economies withinFortMorgan vicinity once again

Fort Morgan was a small fort located in present day Coryell County, Colorado. The fort was built by the United States in 1859 as part of the original Fort Sumner defense line against Mexican forces. The fort served as a garrison until 1861, when it was abandoned and used as an animal barn. In 1865, the fort was re-erected as a military post and remained in use until 1898. The first occupants of thefort were U.S. Volunteers under Captain John Chivington who arrived on July 21, 1859 to garrison the fortification along with three company of militiamen from Pueblo County under Captain Manuel Gomez. On October 1st,1859, Ulysses S Grant relieved Captain Gomez and organized a battalion of cavalry to garrison Fort Morgan which numbered twelve men under Brigadier General James Waco for protection against possible attack from Mexico or Apache Indians on the east side of San Juan River . The first resident Indian is thought to have been Chief Black Hawk who inhabited what is now called Fort Morgan about 1775 AD according to contemporary sources however there is evidence that additional Indian nations such as the Kiowa and Arapaho also resided at or near Fort Morgan over time. There are several accounts from early pioneers describing difficult living conditions inside what would later become known as "the forts walls" due to lack of natural light and constant gunfire coming from Mexican positions across San Juan River .. Many soldiers died during this period including Private Isaac Brown who lost his life while defending Ft. Smith Arkansas on October 15th 1858.. For most of its history, Ft. Morgan functioned primarily as an animal barn where horses were kept and pigs were raised; however, starting in 1865 it became home to two rifle companies (2nd & 3rd Infantry Regiment) equipped with artillery pieces which patrolled the riverbanks surrounding the fortification.. Abandoned for years after being converted into an animal barn, Fort Morgan finally reopened in 1898 after prolonged restoration work done by members of The Denver Museum Association which included moving cannons back into position and restoring social features like huts for troops barracks interior view army barracks exterior view
