Fort Morgan was founded in 1876 as a military post on the San Miguel River. It became a city in 1912, and then a town in 1959. The gunlights history of Fort Morgan begins with the arrival of the American Revolution in 1775. Colonel James Callender arrived at Fort Morgan to lead an expedition against Spanish forces under Governor Montoya. Callender's force consisted of about 20 men and his horses, who were able to march for days without food or water. The Mexican forces had prepared for war by building mounds of cannon, which they used to bombard their opponents. The American Revolution was successful and ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The following year, Colonel Callender led an expedition against Spanish forces again, this time under Governor Montoya. This time, he managed to capture several cannons and bring them back to America. In 1876, General George Armstrong Custer led an army across the United States into Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. His army was destroyed by Mexican troops while trying to cross the Rio Grande near Fort Morgan. As a result of this battle, Rancho El Paso de la Trinidad acquired title to almost 400 square miles (1,200 km2) of present-day Colorado Springs area including Fort Morgan and other surrounding townships. In 1912, John Teller purchased 4 acres (16 m2) of land east of what is now downtown FortMorgan from Manuel Gomez de la Cueva for $25 per acre ($287 per hectare). Mr Teller organized a group called "The Riflemen" who built rudimentary gun lights on his property until 1916 when he donated most or all Of these lights unitl 1942 when Rocky Mountain Arsenal moved into FtMormon/ today called Littleton CO/ These LIGHTS ARE MISSING TODAY BUT WE CAN FIND THEM THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF COLORADO
