In 1870, Colonel George Armstrong Custer led an attack against the Sioux at Little Bighorn Battlefield while stationed at Fort Lyon inside Indian Territory under instructions from President Ulysses S Grant. As part of his orders, General Crook ordered Custer’s soldiers not to fire upon unarmed civilian prisoners unless necessary for self-defense or capture; however, many troops did fire on civilians including women and children. Ten civilian hostages were killed by Custer’s forces during this engagement which is known as Crazy Horse’s victory over American Indians. Fort Morgan was established to provide defense against another such attack by Indians or other actors should such an event occur within Indian Territory; it also functioned as a supply depot for Army units operating in that area. In 1880 Major General Edwin Ayerth ordered all posts within Indian Territory be surrendered to Mexican authorities effective October 15th following negotiations between American officials representing themselves as representatives of both sides without any belligerent elements present; however Fort Morgan continued resistance until November 15 when Mexican authorities entered the fort unopposed after bombardment by American artillerymen; both Apache Chief Cochise and Comanche Chief San Miguel attended ceremonies leading up to surrendering the fortifications1 A new barracks complex was completed at Fort Morgan in 1905 which replaced older structures destroyed during fighting during the Civil War era2 . The old barracks were converted into storage facilities for artillery ammunition prior to their destruction due to weather conditions which made them unsafe for occupancy4 . However, some evidence suggests that some mortar rounds still remain inside these walls today5 .
The first white people in the area came to Fort Morgan in 1827. The fort was built by General John Wool and garrisoned by about 20 soldiers. The fort served as a trading post and military depot until it was destroyed by an attack from the Apache Indians in 1859. The fort was rebuilt, but it was closed down again in 1861 due to the outbreak of the American Civil War. It reopened briefly in 1865, but it too closed down after a few months because of Confederate forces occupying Colorado. The fort continued to be used for storage until 1870 when it finally burned down.
