During World War II, Fort Morgan played an important role as a strategic location for storage and production of munitions during hostilities across North America. It also housed three convalescent hospitals used by American forces returning home after service in Europe and Asia: one caring for wounded officers and enlisted men; one providing medical care to Allied troops; and one housing displaced persons after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. After the war ended,FortMorgan returned to its peacetime role as a small agricultural center with support functions such as local government services and firefighting operations

In 1868, Fort Morgan became an arsenal after its acquisition by the United States government from landowner J. P.] Doane. The arsenal turned into a significant commercial center due to its location near Telluride and Durango which made it possible for American businessmen to produce firearms domestically without having to go through Spain or other countries where importation was prohibited. It continued to serve this purpose until 1886 when it closed down due to lack of funding from Congress and its closure left a lasting impression on Colorado history because it marked one of the last times that weapons production in that state took place outside of downtown Denver alone.
Fort Morgan was founded in 1849 by Kit Carson and his party of westward-bound pioneers. The fort served as a base of operations for the Carson Party and later became a key military outpost in the Rocky Mountains.
