The Fort Morgan Rifle Association was formed in 1907 and has been a part of the Colorado gun community for over 100 years. Fort Morgan, Colorado is a town located in El Paso County, Colorado. The population was 2,553 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of El Paso County. Fort Morgan was founded on October 1, 1877 by Captain John Hickenlooper and Major George Armstrong Custer during the Rocky Mountains Campaign of 1876. The first post office in Fort Morgan opened on December 14, 1877. The name for the fort was changed to Fort Morgan in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman's recent visit to Colorado. In 1925, Fort Morgan became one of eighteen townships within El Paso County when it was organized from parts of other counties. The eastern half of what is now Fort Worth Township still contains part of its original land grant from General Kearney which included most of present-day Fort Morgan and much of Pueblo County including Pueblo Heights and wildlife preserves adjacent to modern day Pueblo City limits. According to the United States Census Bureau, FortMorgan has a total area of , all within El Paso County. As well as being bordered by Parker County on the north side and Juarez Municipality on the south side, it also borders Weld County on its east side and Arapaho Valley Municipality on its west side

Fort Morgan was founded in 1867 by the U.S. Army as a military outpost on the edge of the Denver plateau. The fort served as an artillery and rifle range, storehouse, and post office until it was closed in 1902. It was reopened in 1906 as a national park and is now a popular tourist destination. The fort was originally named Fort Lyon after Major General James Dillon, commanding general of all US Forces in Colorado during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Fort Lyon served as an garrison for three years before it was abandoned due to lack of resources. The name change reflects not just Fort Lyon's location but also its importance within Colorado's military infrastructure: it overlooked most of central Denver at an altitude of 5,000 feet (1,500 metres). In 1868, Major General George Armstrong Custer commanded about 1,200 men at Fort Lyon when he sighted American forces under Brigadier General John Jumper marching towards Santa Fe from Mexico City. In response to this provocation, Mexico declared war on America on July 8th 1868 and began shelling Fort Lyon with cannon fire that continued for days. On October 6th 1868 Commodore John Doolittle’s squadron of 12 ships sailed into Lake Erie from San Francisco and bombarded Mexican positions at Pueblo de las Animas off the coast of Baja California; this action helped broker peace between America and Mexico over accusations of piracy by both countries’ navies. Although hostilities had ceased since Custer's visit two years earlier, American settlers were still building up their presence in what is now Larimer County: around 1870 they started ranching operations near present day Greeley while others continue farming along the banks of the Arkansas River northeast of Fort Morgan proper. To support these activities local citizens formed a volunteer militia known as "The Mountaineers" which drilled at nearby Asotin Park before being called upon to fight against Indians during various campaigns such as 1876 Bearskin Wars (1875), Arapaho Wars (1877), Creek War (1902)
