It played an important role in repelling Confederate attacks on northernColorado towns such as Denver and Greeley. After the war ended, many residents of Fort Morgan decided to move away from war-torn Missouri due to political changes in America which made neutrality more important than before. Some of these refugees settled near Ransom Canyon where they built a small community called Geringer County in 1868-69 while others moved farther downriver into present day Durango County where they formed another small community called Canon City in 1870-71). The Fort Morgan Massacre of 1876 was a mass shooting that took place on October 13, 1876, at the fort in Fort Morgan, Colorado. Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders were responsible for the massacre, which left six people dead and thirteen injured.
